This book offers an introduction to the electromagnetic spectrum using examples of data from a variety of NASA missions and satellite technologies. The 84 problem sets included allow students to explore the concepts of waves, wavelength, frequency, and speed; the Doppler Shift; light; and the energy carried by photons in various bands of the spectrum. Extensive background information is provided which describes the nature of electromagnetic radiation.

Electromagnetic Spectrum Invention Project

I use this activity in class after students learn about the electromagnetic spectrum, some of the uses of various frequencies, and some of the dangers. This project helps students evaluate a new invention/new use for IR camera drones. Then, using their understanding of the EM spectrum and possible uses, they identify a problem and design an invention that uses one or more waves on the EM spectrum to solve the problem. Then, students create a poster to showcase their invention. Students can work independently or in small groups to complete this activity.

This resource includes a student planning sheet and rubric for the poster that students create.

Students will be shown a YouTube Video about different types of electronic communication. There will then be a whole class discussion about 3 specific types (e-mail, social media, and text messages). They will then be given individual LCD tablets and asked to either write A (Email), B (Social Media), or C (Text Messages) for what they would use to send information in certain scenarios that the teacher gives. The teacher will have 3 cards made with A and a picture of email on it, B and a picture of social media platforms on it, and C with a picture of a cell phone on it to help guide students and remind them what to write on their panels. They will hold these up when they are done and a discussion will be done of each scenario.

Use a series of interactive models and games to explore electrostatics. Learn about the effects positive and negative charges have on one another, and investigate these effects further through games. Learn about Coulomb's law and the concept that both the distance between the charges and the difference in the charges affect the strength of the force. Explore polarization at an atomic level, and learn how a material that does not hold any net charge can be attracted to a charged object. Students will be able to:
