Students will construct a simple electromagnet using a dry cell, wire, nail, or other object containing iron (5.4 e), plan and conduct an investigation to determine the strength of an electromagnet (5.4 e), and define a problem and design a solution that uses an electromagnet; demonstrate and explain how the electromagnet works (5.4 e). After the completion of this module students will understand how to construct an electromagnet and explain how one works. This module was developed by Sarah Donnelly as part of a Virginia Commonwealth University STEM initiative sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.

Do you think we can blow up a balloon using only ingredients from the pantry? Using simple, safe, at-home materials, we will explore the concepts of pH and acid-base chemistry and have some fizzy fun! With their signature gas-producing fizz, the acid-base reactions in this episode are both fun and functional. Not only will the reaction blow up a balloon, it also makes your bath bomb fizz in the tub. Join Miss America 2020 to cook up some science in your kitchen, and learn more about the chemistry of fizzy fun! Developed for students in grades 6- 10.

Students will explain that matter consists of atoms held together by electromagnetic forces and exists as different substances which can be utilized based on their properties. Students will be able to describe the behavior of atoms during a chemical change. Students will be able to distinguish covalent and ionic bonds. This module was developed by Patricia Kramolisch as part of a Virginia Commonwealth University STEM initiative sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education.

Earth Science SOL ES.9 states that students should interpret the history of the Earth from fossils. In theory this is easy, but may take years to be proficient at identifying index fossils and getting their geologic age. I have created an app that allows students to measure fossils,  get their identity down to the genus level and their geologic age, in under 5 minutes! The app also can calculate the surface are of the shells.

In the engage section of the 5Elesson, students are introduced to the role of fossils as evidence of evolution and evolutionary relationships by watching a videos about the discovery of Lucy and Ardi and consider what type of information that they can gain from skull fossils. Students will then explore features of skulls from human ancestors and the modern day Homo sapien. After measuring skull to cheekbone ratios, students will create a graph to compare various species. Several interactives are provided to explain fossils, skeletal evidence for human evolution, and phylogenetic trees. Then, students will apply their skills of analyzing data about anatomical similarities and genetic information to depict evolutionary relationships between organisms using cladograms. To evaluate student understanding, students will complete an evolutionary relationships CER.

(1/1 is a picture of my dog) - am prepared to share my work in class with my peers. Bonus - Extended my thinking creating Fraction Art with a mixed number - 1 1/3

Learn more about the entire wildlife rehabilitation process that takes place at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, a hospital for wildlife that treats more than 3,000 wild animals each year. While the goal of wildlife rehabilitation is to restore wild animals to health and release them back into their natural habitats, it takes incredible efforts from many invested people to reach that goal. From the individual who cared enough to stop and find help for an injured wild animal, to volunteer transporters, wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians who provide medical assistance, and more – it truly “takes a village” to help a wild animal in need.

1. Have the students bring a Math graphing problem that they have been working on in class.  **This will take some coordination with their homeroom teacher in order to work! or present a simple graphing problem for them to solve.  It needs to have 3-4 variables. This is so that they can use 3-4 coordinating colors of yarn for their design. In this lesson, we will translate the bar graph chart into a horizontal graph design.  Use the numbers to represent rows of weaving. For example, if a 5 is represented in the information then color in a section of rows on the graph paper to represent 5 rows that will be woven in that color. Tell the students to use the same colors that they have on their math bar graph, when creating their graph for weaving so that there is less confusion.

Learn about the greater impact of wildlife patients at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Every patient is offered state-of-the-art veterinary medical care; some are treated and released, while others may be too seriously injured to recover. Every single animal has a story to share, a story that illustrates the wider problems wildlife face—litter, pesticides, free-roaming domestic animals, habitat loss, and diseases. Even patients that don’t make it live on by helping us shape our conservation education and research as we challenge people of all ages to take action to protect wildlife. More About This Resource  For more information and classroom activities, please visit The Wildlife Center of Virginia and VPM UNTAMED  websites.

Habitat Islands and Wildlife Corridors | UNTAMED
Unrestricted Use

Learn about habitat islands and wildlife corridors. Habitat islands are areas of various sizes that should contain all the necessities for a certain species or multiple species of wildlife to survive and thrive. But, too often these islands are not large enough to provide long-term support for the animals who live within. Surrounding these islands exist areas not hospitable to wildlife, and wildlife that naturally ventures beyond the confines of their habitats are often at risk of conflict with humans and/or human development. The concept of wildlife corridors has become a way to direct animal movement away from, or safely through, dangers caused by humans. As human beings continue to dominate the landscape, habitat islands and wildlife corridors will become increasingly necessary for the survival of our many wild species.

Have you ever imagined what life would be like if you only could see and feel the sun once every seven years? How would you feel if you were alienated and ostracized because you are the only child on planet Venus who has memory of the sun. These are questions generated after reading Ray Bradbury’s All Summer in A Day. Students were asked to create an invention/concept that would assist the protagonist with their aforementioned conflicts. They created wonderful concept inventions by using the library makerspace which included Little Bits!

The site was accessible to all PreK - 12 learners in the county and consisted of choice boards, performance tasks, STEAM, and Book talks. This site was similar to Netflix where students had a choice and voice in the learning process. These resources focused on Henrico's Learning Profile which is a synthesis of the Profile of a VA Graduate and focuses on the 6 C's - Quality Character, Global Citizen, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creative Thinking.
